This fall we went to shoot the 2010 Julia Diehl swimsuit collection in Los Angeles, CA. Jumping from locations in Hollywood, San Pedro to the desolate and remote setting of the Los Angeles desert.
All shot on Hasselblad H3DII and used Profoto lighting to control the end result.

This November 26th Calumet is hosting an event at the Fotomuseum in Antwerpen in cooperation with Apple, Hasselblad and Profoto. I’ll be there to talk about collaborative creativity, workflow and much more. More info and registration: Creative Pro Events
I’m a frequent flyer. That said, I’ve taken about 40 or some flights this year only, and the 1 thing that annoys me most when flying are the stewards. Much too frequently they’re not nice to you, that plain and simple why I’m annoyed some times.
Ok, they have a stressful job (‘right’) and they have long hours (‘right’)… but so do I!
Most of the time when I jump on a flight, the day hasn’t even started for me yet. So, when I get on board on that early flight out so I would still be able to make something of my day, the least I expect is that I get a friendly ‘Hi’ and ‘Bye’. No on board of this flight, you get more! You get ENTERTAINMENT.
Yesterday I was invited to be one of the guest speakers at the Adobe User Group meeting. (Adobe User Group)
The session was all about ‘Urbanization‘ and there were some really good speakers joining me at the table.
The guys at Volstok Telefunken, who created the magnificent ‘Man Bijt Hond’ monsters kicked off with a look behind the scenes on how they work to create these superb stop motion animation films & characters.
Reginald Vandevelde stunned me with his presentation of ‘Urban Exploration’. Not only because of the amazing stills he showed during the presentation, but also because of his great storytelling and amazing drive and commitment to his project.
Last week I went to some Red Carpet event at LA Fashion Week. It’s always nice to see new talent present their work.
And it’s also interesting to see all these people surrounding these new talents popping up as guides to richness, fame and glory. Or at least I hope that’s what they bring.
Check out Li Cari’s show somewhere on YouTube. You’ll like the pre-presentation for sure.
David LaChapelle is one of those rare photographers who’s determined in breaking taboos and getting his message out, without compromise.
Personally, I never worship anyone or anything, but David definitely deserves respect. He’s probably the best known living photographer of our time and he will definitely go into photography history books as an icon.
Check out this video – including the interview with David LaChapelle – on his new gallery opening in New York and take a glimpse of how he works behind the scenes.
Dawn Olivieri by Mike Van Cleven (MIKEVANCLEVEN.COM)
Well, how time flies by!
About 2 years ago I was doing a glamour series for MAXIM magazine and I headed out to California to catch up with some friends of mine who are also in the photo, film and advertising industry. The plan we had was to shoot 1 model per day so we got hold of a couple of model agencies and scouts, did some castings and started planning our shoots.
One of these models was Dawn Olivieri. Her book was great! She had tons of experience and we loved her immediately.
Now 2 years later Dawn has been making it successfully as an actress. Since I met her, she has appeared on CSI, Las Vegas, Veronica Mars and Stargate Atlantis.
Quite fun to take a stroll down memory lane like this …
Check out this video showing off the worldwide caving project of Stephen Alvarez. Stephen shots this at various cave locations including Tennessee, Abkasia, Belize, Oman and New Guinea.
Chase Jarvis needs no introduction to all of you internet roamers. The photography 2.0 evangelist has been posting numerous photo and video messages on his blog that has both helped and inspired thousands of photographers all over the globe.
And that hasn’t gone unnoticed by some of the industry brands. Check Nikon for example. They just endorsed Chase, who in his turn is endorsing the all new Nikon D90.
Good thinking of Nikon. Get a pro – and his whole staff – to test a pro amateur device and have him endorse it. Who can beat that?
Now for the techies – the Nikon D90:
- 12.3 megapixels (the same luscious chip that’s in the Nikon D300)
- D-movie function (that’s right, MOVIE function. 1280×720, .avi format, HD720p)
- High ISO/low-noise performance (Nikon’s ace in the hole. I shot this at 3200 and dug it.)
- 4.5 frames per second
- 3 inch, 920dot LCD with Live View
- Pop up flash with ‘commander’ mode to interface with Nikon’s lighting system
- GPS tagging
One day in Tahiti, as the night was falling, the sky ignited and we were treated on a beautiful spectacle: a seemed like volcano eruption on Moorea. “Seemed like”. Actually the cloud formations and the low sun created this dazzling sight.
Around this time last year, I was returning from a production trip in French Polynesia. During the first night, we were treated on some local culture with a traditional Tahitian dance performance.
It was a treat for the eye to experience a piece of this glorious tradition. As the sun had already set, we used low angle set flashes directed right at the movement.
I’ll share some more of these shots and memories in upcoming posts.
Check out this small video Powers shot during last years production trip to Costa Rica. Models in it are Kevin, Matthias and Jade Foret (all at New Models) and Michelle (Vision)
